Lately I’ve really been enjoying playing with texture in my crocheting. As beautiful as smooth stitches are, there’s something really satisfying with the bumpy texture of the bobble stitch or the wavy look that working in the back of a stitch can create.
With that in mind, I got to work on Zinnia’s Grace. I wanted to make something that flowed together, but also worked with various textures. I think I did a pretty good job capturing that flowing texture feeling. This scarf is designed with a chevron pattern, using alternating rows of bobble, half double crochet (back loop only), and lace stitches. It creates a visually interesting design that just pops!
The chevron portion can give a person a little bit of difficulty, since it creates a break in the pattern as you go across. But once you’ve gone through the repeat, you can get the hang of the stitches pretty quickly.
As for naming the scarf, have you ever seen a Purple Prince Zinnia before? They are some of the prettiest flowers I’ve ever seen. That color of purple is my favorite shade of purple as well. So seeing a bunch of them at the flower store makes me just so happy!
Well, after designing this scarf, I realized that the purple portion reminded me so much of pretty Purple Prince Zinnias! So, TA-DA! Scarf named!
For this pattern, I used a medium weight 4 yarn. The sample is crocheted in a combination of two different brands. The blue and taupe are Caron One Pound and the purple/fuschia is Big Twist Value yarn. Both of them have essentially the same gauge, so they worked well together.
Some substitutes for this yarn would be Lion Brand Heartland or Vanna’s Choice, Red Heart With Love, Caron Jumbo, KNIT PICKS Simply Wool Worsted, and Bernat Super Value. But, honestly, any Aran weight yarn would work for this scarf.
Happy Crocheting!
