Ah summer-time! I canāt wait honestly. Usually, Iām a little wary of the summer time. If you couldnāt tell, I tend to stay out of the sun. My skin is SO fair, I burn so easily. And melt. I just MELT in the sun. BUT, this year I think will be a little different.
As you might know, my husband and I moved to Montreal at the beginning of the year. Apparently, the weather here is totally different from what Iām used to. I mean, I should expect that since this winter was CRAZY. (at least for me).
So, this year, Iām ready for the Canadian summer! I heard that the high temperature for Montreal during the summer is only 25Ā°C (thatās only 77Ā°F for you Fahrenheit people). That is absolute CRAZINESS for me! Iām more used to Japanese summer which is TORTURE! 40Ā°C and 100% humidity.
With that in mind, Iām super excited to be making a slew of summer items!
Today, let me introduce to you the Beach Bum Bouquet cover-up! Itās great for all you beach bums out there! Or pool bumsā¦ or just bums that like pretty crochet things. Itās really for every bum!
This cover-up is a great item to add to your wardrobe. Itās perfect for your days lazing about on the sand (or at the pool). With the beautiful flower pattern, it gives the perfect details to your swim attire. Do you have a boring bathing suit? BAM, now itās adorable! Need a little something to make you a little more comfortable in a bikini? Here you go! This cover-up is also great as a transition piece. You can wear it both on your way and on the beach over your bathing suit, or pop it over a tank with some shorts or jeans and you have a great top for heading out after youāre done playing at the pool.
So get your hooks ready and letās make this thing!
I love to see what you create!

What you need:
Hook Size: 4.5mm hook
Yarn: Medium Weight 4 cotton yarn. Sample knit in 3 skeins Super Size Lily Sugar & Cream Cotton Yarn, 450 yrds, (I used color Potpourri) for the tan colored one And 1 skein 14oz Bernat Handicrafter cotton (I used color White). Pretty much any 4 ply, weight 4, worsted weight cotton yarn will work. (you can use any type of yarn like acrylic if youād like. However, cotton/bamboo/linen will be the best for something youāre wearing out in the sun. Those fibers are the most breathable. But, also be aware, cotton tends to stretch quite a bit when wet).
Gauge: 12st x 14rows = 4ā on 4.5mm hooks with sc
Tools: crochet hook, darning needle, scissors, something to wrap yarn around to make tassels. (I used a broken coaster that was laying on the table. lol.)
Garment Size: Bust 35ā - 42ā, Length: 21ā (the back crosses over which makes it work for many sizes. Schematic and information on how to make the coverup larger is at the end of the pattern. Includes about 8-10ā more ease. So, for busts 45ā - 52ā)
Model: model is 4ā11ā tall, 35ā bust, 27.5ā waist, 38ā hips
Skills needed/Abbreviations:
St/Sts - Stitch/Stitches

The basic shape:
The shape of this cover-up is relatively simple and just a variation on a classic shaped granny square crochet top. The difference comes with the placement of the straps to make it cross in the back and the fact that we are using a flower motif instead of granny squares. Each Square below is one motif.
Motif 1 -
Each motif is 4ā x 4ā
Row 1: ch8, sl st in 1st ch.
Row 2: ch5, [dc in next st, ch2] x7, sl st in ch3 and ch4 spaces of of beginning ch5.
Row 3: ch4, tc3 in same ch4 below, [ch7, 4tc in next ch2 space below, ch3, 4tc in ch2 below] x3, ch7, 4tc in ch2 below, ch3, sl st into ch4 of start of row.
After creating the first motif, we will be connecting the next motifs as we go.
Motif 2 -
Row 1 - 2: Repeat Rows 1 - 2 from motif 1.
Row 3: ch4, 3tc in in same ch4 below, ch3, attach through corner 1 ch7 of motif 1 w/ sc, ch3, 4tc in next ch2 below, ch1, attach through ch3 of motif 1, ch1, 4tc in next ch2 space, ch3, attach through corner 2 ch7 of motif 1 w/ sc, ch3, 4tc in next ch2 below, cont. Following the next steps in Row 3 from motif 1 the rest of the way around.
Motif 3 -
Row 1 - 2: Repeat Rows 1 - 2 from motif 1.
Row 3: repeat steps of Motif 2 until attaching the second corner, ch3, placing hook through the center of one attached corner of both motifs 1 & 2, sc through this space, ch3, cont. Finishing motif 3.
Motif 4 -
Row 1 - 2: Repeat Rows 1 - 2 from motif 1.
Row 3: ch4, 3tc in same ch4 space below, ch3, attach through corner of ch7 of motif 3 w/ sc, ch3, 4tc in next ch2 below, ch1, attach through ch3 of motif 1, ch1, 4tc in next ch2 space, ch3, placing hook through center space of all motifs sc, ch3, complete the rest of the motif attaching as you go.
Continue putting the motif together until you have all 28 flowers put together. This is what the piece should look like once you finish all the motif.
Border -
Starting at one unattached corner ch7 space, attach yarn & ch3, 2dc in same corner ch7 space again, dc evenly until next unattached corner, [3dc, ch2, 3dc] in unattached corner ch7 space, cont. Evenly around entire piece placing [3dc, ch2, 3dc] in every unattached corner. When you come back all the way around, place 3dc in starting corner, ch2, sl st in top of starting ch3. Fasten off.
Straps -
Attach yarn at corner A (refer to picture above) ch20 (for a larger or taller person, add more ch. For example, a large coverup ch25 - 30. You can try the coverup on as you go to play with the length a little until you get the drape you want for your top), attach ch to corner C. Do the same for the opposite side attaching corner B to D. Fasten off.
Neckline Border and Strap Detail-
1.Attach yarn on strap 3 ch spaces away from corner c, ch1, dc in corner a, skip 1st dc, [dc in next st, ch1, skip next st], cont. Across front to opposite strap, ch2 & attach to strap w/ sc at 3 ch spaces from corner b.
2.After attaching to strap, we will be making picot along the strap. Ch3, sc back in same st. [skip 2 st, sc in next st, ch3, sc in same st] cont. Across strap.
3.At end of strap ch1, attach in corner d w/ dc. (follow arrow in picture)
4.For back border, ch1, [skip 1 st, dc in next st, ch1] cont. Across to other starp, follow direction #2 again making picot across the strap, then follow step #4 again to finish other side of back. Fasten off.
Tassels -
For tassels, I found a broken coaster and used it to wrap my yarn around to get tassels all the same length. But you can literally use anything. This method produced 9 inch tassels, which I thought were perfect for this top. Each place I attached tassels has 5 tassels (10 tassels after being folded over and attached). You can attach the tassels wherever youād like, but space them evenly along the bottom of the garment.
Once youāve got the tassels attached, youāre all done! Now get out there and wow everyone at the beach!
if you have any questions, feel free to leave a comment here or contact me. The downloadable pdf will have more pictures for explanations.
For Larger Sizes:
For a wider coverup, you can add add rows of motif to the side portions as shown below in yellow. Adding the motif to these portions will give you an additional 8-10ā of ease around the bust area and lengthen the coverup by about 2ā.
