Hope everyone is having a great winter! So far, this year hasn’t been so bad.

Just recently, my husband and I took a trip to the USA to visit my family. We had a wonderful time, and we were able to do so many things that I miss doing now that I live in Canada. (ie. go to restaurants, eating way too much comfort food, and having my mother spoil me!)

Now, we’re back home and getting back into the swing of things. It’s so nuts how being away for even a short time can make you less than functional! We were only gone for a week, and getting back to my normal work schedule has been a CHALLENGE!

But, I’m back, and I’m ready to share with all of you another great pattern!

So, do you have a case for your crochet hooks?

For the longest time, I didn’t! My hooks just hung out in the bottom of a basket which I also had a load of yarn in. Every crochet project, I had to dig through that basket to the very bottom, then paw through the hooks and other miscellaneous junk that has accumulated to find what I needed. (crazy what you get used to, right).

I finally decided, ok, ENOUGH! I need a case! So, first I went on a journey all around town and the internet trying to find something I liked, to no avail!

But, then I was like…. um… duh… why don’t I just make one!!! and, so I did!

This is the Around the Square Case. It’s neat because it can be used for some many more things than just crochet hooks! I made one for hooks, one for my loose straight knitting needles, and a case for my crazy collection of sharpies. But, not only does it work for those, but you can store makeup brushes and the likes in one too!

For my cases, I used Caron One Pound and Big Twist Value Yarns. But, you can use pretty much any weight 4 yarn of your choice. So, the options for this case are literally endless!

What You Need:

Hook: 5mm or size needed to obtain gauge

Yarn: Medium weight 4 yarn. Sample knit in 4 colors of Big Twist brand value yarn (black/purple) and Caron One Pound Yarn (green/grey/white) 380 yds total

Gauge: 13 sc and 14 rows = 4 inches square.

Finished Size: 17.5 inches x 7.5 inches

Abbreviations:

Abbreviations in US terms.
Ch - chain
Sl st - slip stitch
Sc - single crochet
Hdc - half double crochet
Dc - double crochet
FO - fasten off

Notes:

Each Granny Square is approximately 3.25” x 3.25”
Ch5 at beginning of each Row of granny square counts as 1dc and a ch2.

Step 1: Finish 10 Granny Squares. Weave in all ends. I did 2 of each set (or any pattern of colors you prefer).

Granny Square:
Ch 4, sl st into 1st ch (creates a circle)
Row 1: ch5, 3dc into circle, ch2, 3dc into circle, ch2, 3dc into circle, ch2, 2dc into circle, sl st into 3rd ch of ch5
Row 2: sl st a 2nd time into the same ch5 space as Row 1, ch5, 3dc into same space again, ch1, *3dc into next ch2 space, ch2, 3dc in same ch2 space, ch1*, rep in remaining two ch2 spaces around, 2dc into same space as sl st at beginning of row, sl st into 3rd ch of ch5 at start of row.

Step 2: Connect motifs with any method you prefer.

I use one of the “join as you go” methods because it’s the easiest for me. This Join As You Go Tutorial is the method I used. But, please use your preferred join method. Do not cut yarn.

Step 3: After all the squares are attached

ch2 and HDC around the outside placing 3 HDC in each corner. This doesn’t have to be exact. Just make sure any gaps are closed. (Piece in total should be about 17.5 inches x 7.5 inches)

Step 4: Now it's time to make the inside liner.

Ch 25 (7.5 inches)
Row 1: Sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc across, turn.
Row 2: ch1, sc in 1st stitch and all the way across (24 st)
Continue until piece reaches 17.5 inches long. (About 68 rows). Fasten off. Weave in ends.

Step 5: Next is the pocket.

Ch 13 (3.5 inches)
Row 1: sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc across. Turn.
Row 2: ch1, sc in 1st st and all the way across (12 st)

Continue until piece reaches 17.5 inches long. (About 68 rows). Fasten off. Weave in end.

Attach contrast color to corner of pocket piece and sc 68 st across. Turn.
Ch 2, skip 1st st, [(sc, ch2, sc) all in 1 st, skip 2 st] continue [ ] across until last 2 st. Hdc in last st. Fasten off. Weave in ends.

Step 6: Now it’s time to attach all the pieces together starting with attaching the pocket to the back liner.

With a darning needle, sew the pocket down to the liner along the sides and bottom of liner. Then, sew the partition for each hook down to the liner.

I have 12 hooks, so I made 12 hook partitions and then left the remainder as a pocket for other things. You can adjust the number of partitions based on how many you need.

Weave in ends.

Step 7: We need to attach the inner liner to the front next.

Using the contrast colors again, using single crochets, attach the inner liner to the front, placing 3sc in each corner to prevent curving corners. Sl st to first st of the round. Do Not Turn. Countining in round, ch 2, skip the next st and [(sc, ch2, sc) all in next st, skip 2 st], continue [ ] all the way around. At the end of the round, hdc in beginning ch2. Fasten off. Weave in ends.

Step 8: Lastly, decide how you want the case to fold.

Mine folds in 3rds. Attach a button on the side you want (mines on the right), then make the button strap.

Step 9: Time to make the Button Strap

Button Strap:
ch 19
Row 1: sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc across. Turn.
Row 2: Ch1, sc in 1st st, sc across.

Pull the strap through the top layer only, about 5 inches from the left side and sew the 2 sides of strap together to make a loop. Pull strap through until sewn together portion is hidden under top layer.

And you’re DONE!
